The maths your payroll department should be doing —
but you can never see.
ShiftSlip models every rule in your pay agreement exactly.
Here is precisely how it works.
Ireland — How the HSE calculates your pay
These are the rules most tools get wrong. ShiftSlip gets them right.
1. Sunday Premium
- The rule: Sunday pay is Double Time — your hourly rate × 2.
- Example: Staff Nurse Point 4, hourly rate €20.83. One Sunday shift (12 hours) = €20.83 × 2 × 12 = €499.92 gross for the shift.
2. Saturday Premium
- The rule: Saturday premium is NOT a multiplier. It is a fixed cash payment of €18.63–€19.01 per Saturday worked, regardless of how many hours you work.
- Example: A 12-hour Saturday shift still earns the same flat premium as a 4-hour Saturday. Basic pay for the hours worked is paid separately on top.
3. Night Duty
- The rule: Night duty (20:00–08:00) pays Time + ¼ (your hourly rate × 1.25). BUT it is only payable if you complete at least 3 hours between midnight and 07:00.
- Example: A shift from 20:00 to 02:00 qualifies (2 hours midnight to 02:00 — wait, this is only 2 hours). A shift from 20:00 to 03:30 qualifies (3.5 hours between midnight and 03:30 ✅).
4. Twilight Payment
- The rule: For hours worked between 20:00 and the end of a day shift, Time + 1/6 (×1.167) applies.
- Example: A day shift running from 08:00 to 21:00 earns standard pay for 08:00–20:00, and twilight rate (×1.167) for 20:00–21:00.
5. PRSI Taper
- The rule:
- Earnings below €352/week: no PRSI
- Earnings €352.01–€424/week: PRSI at 4.2%, with a tapering credit (max €12, reduced by one-sixth of earnings above €352.01)
- Earnings above €424/week: PRSI at 4.2%, no credit
- Why this matters: A single extra shift can push you above the taper threshold and cost you more PRSI than the shift earned. ShiftSlip shows you this before it happens.
- Example: Weekly earnings of €380 → PRSI = (€380 × 4.2%) minus credit of (€12 - ((€380 - €352.01) / 6)) = calculated exactly.
6. ASC (Additional Superannuation Contribution)
- The rule:
- Single Public Service Pension Scheme (post-2013): 3.33% on earnings above €34,500/year
- Standard Accrual (pre-2013 entrants): 10% on earnings above €34,500/year
- Why it matters: Pre-2013 and post-2013 entrants pay wildly different rates. Most overseas-trained nurses don't know which scheme they are on. ShiftSlip tells you and calculates accordingly.
United Kingdom — How NHS Agenda for Change pay is calculated
1. Unsocial Hours Enhancements
- Bands 1–3: +37% enhancement for nights and Saturdays, +74% for Sundays and bank holidays
- Bands 4–9: +30% enhancement for nights and Saturdays, +60% for Sundays and bank holidays
- Example: Band 5 nurse, salary point £29,970 → hourly rate £15.37. Sunday shift: £15.37 × 1.60 = £24.59/hour.
2. NHS Pension Tiers (April 2025)
| Tier | Pensionable pay | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Up to £13,259 | 5.2% |
| 2 | £13,260–£26,831 | 6.5% |
| 3 | £26,832–£32,691 | 8.3% |
| 4 | £32,692–£49,078 | 9.8% |
| 5 | £49,079–£62,268 | 10.7% |
| 6 | Above £62,268 | 12.5% |
3. Ambulance Staff (Annex E)
Ambulance staff use a completely different enhancement model — a flat prospective percentage of basic salary (up to 25%), based on the proportion of unsocial hours in their rota. ShiftSlip handles this separately.
