How is HSE night duty pay calculated? The complete 2026 guide
HSE night duty pays Time + ¼ (×1.25 your hourly rate) — but only if you complete at least 3 hours between midnight and 07:00. Here is the exact calculation with worked examples.
If you work night shifts in an Irish HSE hospital, you are entitled to a Night Duty premium — but only under specific conditions that many nurses are not fully aware of. The premium is Time + ¼, meaning your hourly rate multiplied by 1.25. However, there is a critical qualifying condition: the shift must include at least 3 hours between midnight (00:00) and 07:00.
This single condition is responsible for a significant proportion of HSE payroll disputes. A nurse finishing at 02:00 — only two hours past midnight — receives no night premium at all. A nurse finishing at 03:01 qualifies in full.
This guide explains exactly how the calculation works, with worked examples at real 2026 HSE salary rates.
What is the HSE night duty rate?
Night duty in the HSE is paid at Time + ¼, also written as ×1.25. This applies to hours worked between 20:00 and 08:00, provided the qualifying condition is met.
The qualifying condition: the worker must complete a minimum of 3 hours between 00:00 and 07:00.
This rule is set out in HSE HR Circular and applies to all staff on the Consolidated Pay Scales, including Staff Nurses, Clinical Nurse Managers, HCAs, and NCHDs on relevant contracts.
The midnight condition — explained clearly
This is where most confusion arises.
The night duty premium does not apply simply because your shift starts at 20:00 or later. It applies only when your working hours include at least 3 continuous or cumulative hours within the window from midnight (00:00) to 07:00.
Examples:
| Shift | Hours midnight to 07:00 | Qualifies? |
|---|---|---|
| 20:00 – 02:00 | 2 hours | ❌ No |
| 20:00 – 03:00 | 3 hours | ✅ Yes |
| 20:00 – 08:00 | 7 hours | ✅ Yes |
| 22:00 – 01:30 | 1.5 hours | ❌ No |
| 00:00 – 08:00 | 7 hours | ✅ Yes |
If your shift does not qualify, you receive standard basic pay only. No enhancement.
Worked example — Staff Nurse Point 4, 2026 rates
Annual salary: €40,641 Hourly rate: €40,641 ÷ 52 ÷ 39 = €20.02/hour (39-hour week)
(Note: always divide by contracted hours per week, not 40.)
Scenario: Sunday night shift, 20:00–08:00 (12 hours)
This shift has two premiums applying simultaneously:
- Sunday rate: ×2 (Double Time)
- Night duty: ×1.25
How are they combined? In the HSE, premiums are not multiplied together — the higher applicable rate takes precedence unless HR circular specifies otherwise. For Sunday nights, the Sunday premium (×2) is the dominant rate. The night premium (×1.25) does not stack on top in most HSE contracts.
Always verify your specific contract or collective agreement. ShiftSlip models this correctly for each grade.
Standard night shift (non-Sunday), 20:00–08:00 (12 hours):
| Element | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Basic hours | 12 × €20.02 | €240.24 |
| Night premium (×0.25 extra) | 12 × €20.02 × 0.25 | €60.06 |
| Gross shift total | €300.30 |
What about twilight hours?
Between 20:00 and midnight (or end of your day shift) — before the night period fully kicks in — you may be entitled to the Twilight payment of Time + 1/6 (×1.167). This is separate from the Night Duty premium.
If your shift runs from 08:00 to 21:00 (a long day shift running into the evening), the hours from 20:00–21:00 attract the Twilight rate. This is not the same as Night Duty and does not require the midnight condition.
How to check if your payslip is correct
Your SAP payslip will show your gross pay for the period but rarely breaks down the shift-by-shift premium calculation. To verify:
- Know your hourly rate (annual salary ÷ 52 ÷ 39)
- Count only the hours between 00:00 and 07:00 in each shift
- If those hours total 3 or more, the night premium applies to your entire shift hours (20:00–08:00), not just the midnight window
- Calculate: total shift hours × hourly rate × 0.25 = the premium element
- Compare to what your payslip shows
If you believe there is a discrepancy, ShiftSlip will calculate the correct amount and generate a letter to your HR department citing the exact circular.
